Vimeo: Nas Reacts to Jay-Z's 'Empire State of Mind' 'Video'

In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, legendary rapper Nas shared his thoughts on fellow New York native and rap rival Jay-Z's massive hit 'Empire State of Mind.' Released in 2009 as part of Jigga's seventh studio album Watch the Throne (a collaborative effort with Kanye West), the song became an instant anthem for Big Apple residents everywhere.

Nas, who himself is no stranger to creating timeless NYC anthems ('New York State of Mind' comes to mind from his classic debut album Illmatic in 1994), shared some candid thoughts on Jay's take. When asked if he felt any jealousy or competition brewing within him upon hearing the song's massive success, Nas replied:

'It don't bother me no more... I'm a grown man now.'

The Queensbridge MC went on to praise his Brooklyn counterpart for capturing 'the essence of New York' in his lyrics.

'When you hear 'Empire State of Mind,' that's what it is,' Nas said. ''Jay-Z' did an amazing job with the track, and everybody loved it... It was a great thing.'

However, when asked if he felt like Jay had somehow surpassed him as king of New York hip-hop (a title many have long associated with Nas himself), the Queens emcee remained characteristically humble.

'That's not something I'm worried about,' he quipped. 'I've been doing this too long... If it was all about selling records, then everybody would be rich.'

Ultimately, when asked what advice he'd give to up-and-coming MCs looking to follow in his and Jay-Z's footsteps as hip-hop legends from New York City, Nas offered some sage wisdom.

'Stay true to yourself,' he advised. 'Don't let nobody dictate who you are or how you should be.'
